A silver robber, head of river streams is a main trophy of a spinninger in the delta of Volga. In two or three days you can catch a hundred or hundred and a half of silver fishes weighing from 4 till 6-10 pounds.

An asp stays over holes in the high sheets of water, where in powerful streams giddy whirlpools bring its food – small fishes. The asp can be found in the baffling streams, behind a cape of a bank too. It likes to come to sand banks to a border of streams also. In early spring (beginning of April) and late autumn (middle-end of November) the asp often chooses non-standard places – in the calm stream, near flooded snags and hunts from its ambush like a pike. The good trophy can be a result of fishing in at first sight absolutely inhabited places with a big shaky spoon-bait or a silver twister (mostly ‘Mepps Aglia Long’ ¹4), a lure moving between the snags. The gregarious asp fishing is an exciting process, cause when a bite follows another bite a fisher looses a sense of reality. Stop and turn back! There are about fifteen fishes weighing from four till six pounds. Isn’t it time to stop and to fish with a new principal: ‘caught – let fish go’? Otherwise a fisher will have to decide what to do with 200 pounds of asp. It is not realizable to eat it. Of course, you can make a balyk from 5-6 fishes and take them home but what to do with others? To throw away? Agree with us, it is a barbarity. It is better to let it go safe and sound. At least we came here not for pounds but for pleasure, didn’t we?

After water becomes warmer the asp activates, gathers together in flocks and hunts with passion. Since the second half of summer till the end of October or even till November you can see a place of such a feast from far away: splashes, spreading young fishes and gulls hubbabing over the water.

Trying not to make a noise boat to the fighting place. There are different ways to fish the asp. Sometimes drifting fishing against the current with a shaky spoon-bait (‘Kastmaster’ or any another silver-yellow slim ‘shaker’) gives wonderful results. If bites are too seldom, change boat position, come up the stream and fish with a ‘twister’ or a swimming lure moving the bait against the current. With such a method you can entice even a capricious asp.

It is almost not realizable to catch a really big asp occasionally. You will have to ‘hunt’ for it separately and purposefully. Change your bait sometimes for another big one, for example, wide ‘Shtorling’ type ‘shaker’ or a ‘twister’ ¹4-6 (I mostly use ‘Aglia Long’ or ‘Blue Fox’). A big, full-grown asp hunts alone. After a fisher has seen a powerful thrust or a fighting turn somewhere in the stream in the bottom of a wall of reed he should carefully and slowly fish all around this place. Don’t mind that just in hundred meters from you a noisy aspen fight is ‘boiling’, from which just yesterday you fished the peaceful asps one by one. Don’t hurry – the precious trophy can be fished only here.

There is another one way to fish a big asp. It is noticed that in the big channels the big asp stays just near the edge of the reed and not at the surface (usually small fishes of just two pounds swim there) but in the depth of three meters or deeper. To catch it you need to boat to the middle of stream and move down the current, throwing bait just near the edge. In some seconds after the bait has sunk to the necessary depth, you should start a slow underwinding. As a rule a thrust comes in the first ten meters of a fishing-line. Though you can loose your bait, but this is the most effective method of asp fishing. Once in an hour I caught twenty asps and each of them weighed six pounds! As a rule I use next baits: compact good playing ‘shakers’, for example, ‘Silver Creek’ of ‘Daiwa’ or “Genial’ made by ‘ABU Garcia’. It is noticed that such spoon-baits are much more effective for asp fishing than ‘Kastmaster’.

In the delta the asp can be fished all the open water season and only in the hottest time of July it bites very seldom. However, if to talk of real big asp fishing, I would select April and October from all the season. Just in these months there are all chances to catch the biggest and the strongest Volga asp.

There are very many asps in the delta of Volga and because of the asp is a gregarious fish it will not be hard to find a place for asp fishing.
