They say that a pike is a ‘weed’ fish, but it is always interesting and recklessly to fish it especially big ones. Volga canals join Caspian Sea and form famous Caspian so-called ‘rolls’ - shoreless shallow spaciousness, overgrown with islands of reed, nets of pondweed and leaves of water-lilies. It is a real pike kingdom. The toothy predator is its absolute mistress. There is a lot of it here, in the ideal natural ambushes.

Pike fishing starts in early spring in the end of March–beginning of April. Then a break for spawning starts and continues for two weeks, and then pikes’ greediness increases again. In May-June the spring tide ‘corrects’ pike fishing process and pike can be fished in the sandbanks in the bushes and high grass. In the heat peak of July only at dawn you can catch a pike with bait put exactly near nose of a fish.
In August biting activates and in autumn increases till a real gobble again, which is continuing till the water freezes over.

It is very interesting to fish the pike at the ‘rolls’. The depth is just 1-1,5 meter and further - even 20-30 centimeters. There are reeds and algae everywhere. Biting happens just before your eyes. Every spinninger knows how the pike opposes. Here are jerks, pulls, ‘candles’, ‘dance on a tail’ – all this is pike fishing!

You will need a firm and steady spinning 2,4-2,7 meters long with a dough weighing 10-50 grams. You should prefer a fixed-spool reel, cause you will fish in shallow water and need to throw exactly and experiment with baits constantly.

The braided fishing-line with diameter of 0,18-0,22 mm will be enough to fight with a pike of 20-30 pounds. A soft and safe braided metal snell is indispensable at the pike fishing.

Even when there is such plenty of fishes a fisher needs to look for a good trophy. Active search is a guaranty of success.

There is no such plenty of pikes anywhere like in this place. Sometimes it seems that there is more fish than water. Just think – while fishing at the same place for two hours 72 fishes were caught. Fishes weight was 1-6,5 kg.

After pike spawning is over it can be actively fished with spinning at the same places. It bites any baits but most of all – ‘twisters’ and swimming lures. Usually fishers catch male pikes weighing maximum four pounds (seems like they take spawning easier than females).
