Fishing :: Pikeperch

You will not find a lot of pikeperches in the delta of Volga. It is better to go a little higher: to Volga, Akhtuba, Volgograd and Astrakhan regions and look for places about 62 land miles higher than Astrakhan.

There are no special places inhabited by the pikeperches in the delta except of Vyshka village region placed at the main bank entrance to the Caspian Sea, where flocks of toothy fishes stay at the stony-pebbly bottom. There are seldom not silted holes and sandy-argillaceous rifts in another places where a pikeperch can be met.

There are two ways to fish a pikeperch in the delta: spinning with jig lures (vibrotails, twisters with sinker bulb weighing 16-40 grams) or vertical spoon-baiting with twister and heavy cut spoon-bait. Jig fishing method is simple and accessible – stepwise passing near bottom with seldom pauses and good undercutting after typical pikeperch ‘knocking’. Vertical spoon-baiting is used while boating down stream. After you had totally ‘knocked’ a hole or a kerb and caught two or three pikeperches you will need to return back and repeat this ‘route’.

The pikeperch often stays in the half of meter from a kerb of a washed away bank. Just sink bait vertically and fish is caught. Often the pikeperch can be fished near bank, while there was no bite in the channel kerb.

Don’t hope to fish fantastic pikeperch trophies in the delta of Volga. Only in spring and autumn migration there is a chance to meet a big flock of toothy predator and catch ten or twenty fishes weighing just about two pounds. The really big pikeperch can be fished in Akhtuba and Volga outlet continuing till Astrakhan.
